Relieve the pain of cancer

Mesothelioma cancer pain can be caused by cancer or its treatment.  For example, people taking chemotherapy may have facial pain.

If the condition of the mesothelioma cancer continues to worsen, the pain caused by the cancer can become very intense.  Strong painkillers (such as morphine or codeine) relieve pain best, and the dosage of these medications may need to be increased from small to large amounts in order to work well.

Since these can be habit-forming, powerful pain medications (drugs) are often not readily available.  The government and even well-meaning health workers may limit their use for fear of drug abuse and drug addiction.  This causes unnecessary suffering for people suffering from mesothelioma cancer or other long-term illnesses.  These drugs are listed on the World Health Organization's standard list of essential medicines, but more needs to be done to ensure that they are readily available to people with mesothelioma cancer and other people suffering from acute pain.  We must work against the stigma attached to these drugs, and recognize that it is a human right to be free from pain.

Other ways to reduce the pain of cancer or other treatments for cancer include acupuncture, massage and physical therapy.

 Attending the last life

No matter where you live and no matter how much money you spend, there are cancers that have no cure.  It may not cure cancer, but a positive attitude can help a person with cancer and their loved ones to feel better and to enrich their day.  Maintaining a good attitude can help a person gain the energy needed to spend a day, whether he receives medical treatment or not.

For cancers that cannot be cured, the time will finally come when death is imminent.  When that happens, help the person and those who love him to agree on what is happening, and to prepare.  Remind him that you will be by his side in life and death.  She may need medication to ease the pain, and she will need loving care to move on to relief and a comfortable death.
